The PixelYourSite plugin is great for implementing pixels on the site. In the previous article – Installing PixelYourSite on your website – we explained how to easily implement the plugin and pixels. In the following post, we will learn how to add Google Ads conversion tracking code, how to set up events on the site, how to build Custom Conversions on Facebook and Custom Audiences based on clicks on the site (ClickEvent), as well as learn about automatic events fired on every page of your site (GeneralEvent), and how to add additional pixels to the header and footer of our website.
Setting up Google Ads conversion tracking code
Setting up events on the site
Events are small snippets of code that send information about what your visitors are doing on your site. With events, you can track important actions, such as page visits, clicks, scrolling, mouse hover, etc.
Event Parameters
Each event can have multiple parameters, which send additional information about that specific action. Facebook events can have all kinds of parameters, whereas Google Analytics events have a fixed structure. The plugin automatically tracks several events. In addition, you can also configure your own events in the Events tab:
In the Events tab, you will find a list of all the events you previously configured (if any). Hovering over each event will display several options: Disable, Enable, and Remove. Additionally, you can edit your events.
The events table will display information about the events as follows:
Name: The name given to the event
Trigger: The condition by which the event will be fired, such as: visit to a specific page, click on a button, click on a specific URL, hovering the mouse over an element on the page, page scroll, etc.
Networks: On which system the event will be fired – Facebook, Google Analytics, Google Ads, etc.
Enable / Disable events
If for any reason you need to disable all events, you can do so from the top button. Click Save Settings after making changes so they take effect
Adding events
Give your event a relevant name; the name is used for internal purposes and is visible only to you:
Set the conditions for firing the event
Choose one of the available conditions:
When selecting the URL option, you can use contains or match. When URL Contains is selected, any URL containing the string will fire the event. If URL Match is used, only the exact URL will fire the event.
* You can add a delay of a few seconds before firing the event under the delay setting:
Configure your event
You can configure the event for one or more networks: Facebook, Google Analytics. Each network will have its own set of standard events, but you can also configure your own custom events.
Events on Facebook:
Click the Enable on Facebook button, choose the event type. There are standard events, but you can also configure custom events.
Notes:
– Standard events can be used for optimization and reports. You can also build Custom Audiences and Custom Conversions.
– Custom events cannot be optimized or viewed in reports; for this, you need to create Custom Conversions. With custom events, you can build a Custom Audience.
Enable the Add Parameters button to add value, currency, and additional parameters:
Events in Google Analytics
Turn on the Enable on Google Analytics button. Events in Google Analytics have a fixed structure:
* action
* category
* label
* value
Signal Event
SignalEvent is an automatic feature in the plugin that tracks every click on the website and sends an Event to the Facebook Pixel that includes information such as traffic source, click date, and more. In Analytics, data is sent as an Event that includes the link and the text on the button (or link).
You can use SignalEvent to create Custom Audiences and Custom Conversions. This event is designed to help you replace almost any custom event you have. Signal has various triggers and relevant parameters that will help you track any action.
The PageView event receives default parameters, plus two additional tags – tags and post_category. All events tracked by the plugin have many parameters configured by default. They will help you build almost any Custom Audience or Custom Conversion, for example:
You can find its settings on the plugin’s main page:
Signal event parameters
The most important parameter is event_action. This parameter identifies the action that triggers the event (internal click, video play, form, etc.).
There are additional types of parameters:
text: The text from a link, button, or form button.
target_URL: The destination URL of the link.
form_class: Tracks the form’s CSS.
form_id: Tracks the form’s CSS ID.
download_type: Tracks the file type, such as PDF, doc, zip, etc.
download_name: Tracks the downloaded file name.
download_URL: Tracks the download URL.
There is a set of “shared parameters” added to all events by the plugin:
page_title: Tracks the title of the page where the event occurs.
post_type: Tracks the type of post where the event occurs.
event_URL: Tracks the URL where the event occurs.
user_role: Tracks the user role of the visitor firing the event.
event_time (pro): Tracks the user’s hour.
event_day (pro): Tracks the user’s day.
event_month (pro): Tracks the user’s month.
traffic_source (pro): Tracks the traffic source.
UTMs (pro): Tracks URL tags.
To check, for example, which parameters are sent in a SignalEvent using the Facebook Chrome extension – Facebook Pixel Helper, go to your site and click on a link or button, and you can see in the extension which parameters are sent to Facebook:
Facebook Custom Conversions and Custom Audiences based on website clicks (Signal Event)
Track clicks (pro trigger)
SignalEvent will trigger on internal or external links.
event_action: Internal click or external click
target_url: The URL opened by the link
text: Link or button text
Facebook Custom Audiences from clicks
You can use the Signal event to create Custom Audiences and Lookalikes.
These Custom Audiences can be very broad, like anyone who clicked a link, or very specific, people who clicked a specific link from a specific page.
Example:
People who clicked outbound links pointing to the pixelyoursite.com website.
Facebook Custom Conversions from clicks
You can use the Signal event to create Custom Conversions.
Example:
People who clicked outbound links pointing to the pixelyoursite.com website.
Please note, just like tracking clicks, you can track video views, phone calls, downloads, email clicks, etc.
