If every content writer has the same 22 keyboard letters at their disposal, and the Hebrew language is everyone’s shared native tongue, and even the high school matriculation exam in grammar was virtually identical, how is it that there are articles that are a joy to read, and articles that only God knows why they were written in the first place? In this article, we will review the 3 most important principles of content writing, adhered to by Israel’s top content writers before they sit down to write an article. Writing content this way will lead you to high-quality, engaging, and original results in marketing content writing.
Marketing Content Writing - Write only about what you understand!
First and foremost – write only if you understand the topic. Yes, yes, if you try to write legal content without having studied law (and there are plenty of content writers who claim they “can write about anything”), or about technology when in reality they still search on Bing instead of Google or go grocery shopping at the supermarket to gather material for a sitcom script instead of ordering online – it can be spotted from a mile away… If I, for example, write website content or write about how to do keyword research, or how to write quality content, I will likely do it quite well and it will also take me much less time than a medical student. On the other hand, if I need to write about possible solutions for pain relief for colorectal cancer patients, the student will likely do it with ease without needing to consult sources or rewrite, while I, on the other hand, will find myself struggling to find information, trying to rewrite words I don’t even understand, and using a snorkel to dive to the eighth page of Google…
So for goodness’ sake – if you decide to write yourself, write only about topics you truly understand and in the writing style you specialize in and know well, and if you don’t understand that topic, study it thoroughly before writing. If you expect to write many articles on the same topic, it’s worth studying the subject in depth, and the secret is to study before you start writing and not while doing it.
Website Content Writing - From Macro to Micro
Good writing is like a puzzle. Have you ever tried to solve a puzzle without starting with the frame? Of course not. So quality writing is like a puzzle. First, it’s best to start “with the frame” and only then fill in and expand the article.
If, for example, the task is writing blog content: an article on “10 Ways to Deal with Headaches”, it’s best to first create an opening title, then leave room for an opening paragraph, which you will complete later, and then write 10 possible points (which will become subheadings) to deal with headaches, for example:
- Home remedies
- Yoga
- Painkillers
- Medical cannabis
- Drinking water
- Breathing exercises
- Massage
- Eating
- Acupuncture
- Sleeping
And only then, expand on each of the points (as you have probably already realized, I don’t often suffer from headaches). After we’re done, we should go back to the introduction and write it, according to the content of the article, most of which has already been written. Usually, the introduction will contain a general sentence about the topic plus a short elaboration on what the article will discuss… If the topic of the article is “How much does it cost to buy a closet”, it is desirable that right in the introduction there will be some general answer, explaining to the reader that in the article they will receive an exact answer and that it’s not just junk content, such as: “The price of a closet ranges between 599 NIS and 9,999 NIS. In this article, we will detail what factors affect the price, which closets are considered inexpensive and which are more expensive, including examples and links to purchase closets at the best prices.”
Finally, we will add a concluding paragraph that will serve as a good closing for the article, such as: “In this article, we reviewed ten closet models, ranging from simple closets to luxury solid wood closets with a perfect finish. We hope and wish that you enjoy the closet you choose, give it love, make sure it stays clean, and that its hinges never squeak.”
If you were asked to write a promotional paragraph at the end of the article, you can style the concluding paragraph slightly, for example: “At Bol Etz, you’ll find a variety of closets starting from 599 NIS up to 9,999 NIS. All closets come with home delivery and a full warranty. You can order online, or by phone: 052-123-4567.”
Enough with the miztakes!
How much longer with the spelling / grammar mistakes?! And I’m not talking about content writing and social media management or small websites for Yossi Movers or David Pest Control, I’m talking about the biggest websites in Israel too! I constantly see miztakes – endlessly! Aviv Geffen made a career out of it, by the way… But seriously – enough with the mistakes! Before submitting an article or uploading it to a website – review it, make sure there are no typos, that sentences make sense, that there are no gender agreement mistakes, that the article flows smoothly, that it’s engaging, and most importantly – provides real value and at least one good enough reason to read it!
Good proofreading is one that improves and upgrades the article rather than leaving it exactly as it was without it. By the way, that’s a sentence I added during the proofreading of this article.
Optional: Writing blog content with SEO optimization
In many cases, the content we write will need to be written in ‘Googlish’, or in other words: SEO-optimized. In such cases, it is advisable to also pay attention to the following, among other things:
- Using the keyword throughout the text in the opening paragraph, in the subheadings, and in the body text itself. You don’t need to overdo it, but it is important to incorporate it. If, for example, the keyword is “recommended gas grill”, and our subheading is “How to Choose a Gas Grill”, it would be worthwhile to change it to “How to Choose a Recommended Gas Grill”.
- Using tables. Google loves tables.
- Using bulleted or numbered lists. Google loves lists.
- Subheadings – and as many as possible! By the way, this helps both Google and the user reading the article, who will be able to navigate to the part that interests them in the article, such as: what is the price, what are the possible solutions, how does it work, and more…
- There are several other principles that will help your article reach the top spots on Google, which can be read here.
Summary - Content Writing and Social Media Management
So true, we all write using the same keyboard and the same language, but what separates an article that delivers value and is enjoyable to read from a junk article buried on page ten of Google (at best) is adhering to the 3 principles: writing only about what you understand, writing that starts from the frame, and thorough proofreading. If you want the article to appear in top spots on Google, you must also follow the 4 principles for optimizing the article for Google. If you ever forget what these principles are, you’re always welcome to come back to this article and read it, or simply look at how it’s structured; it undoubtedly upholds the aforementioned principles.
Good luck.
