Over the past year, there has been a widespread feeling that Facebook usage is declining. Recently, it was also published that 26% of users in the US deleted the app from their phones during the past year. But is this also true for Israeli users?

Usage Mode
The shift to mobile-only browsing continues to gain momentum. In 2017, 60% of Facebook browsing was done via mobile only, and in 2018 we see an increase of about 7% in mobile browsing and a decrease in the percentage of desktop-only browsing (4%).
Parallel browsing on mobile and desktop (multi-screen browsing) is also decreasing: from 34% in 2017 to 29% in 2018. Today, mobile has taken over browsing, and we barely see users accessing the internet from other digital media anymore.
In addition, Android continues to be the leading operating system with 65% of all users, compared to only 19% for iPhone.
Activity Frequency
Activity frequency has indeed decreased, but not significantly. For example, we give slightly fewer likes to posts (11 compared to 13), comment a bit less (5 compared to 6 last year), and click less on ads – 11 clicks compared to 13 last year.
Popular Pages
Last year, the ‘Statusim Metzaytzim’ affair returned the page to the top 10 popular pages in Israel straight to 9th place with 670,000 Israeli fans. This year, the page made way for the fashion page of the ‘Castro’ company.
The Texas Hold’em Poker page remains the largest page in Israel, with over a million Israeli fans (a figure that is still surprising considering Israelis are forbidden to gamble on such sites). In second place remains the YNET page with over 900,000 followers, and in third place appears the “HaTzinoret” page, which was called “HaTzinor” last year and was also in third place then (with over 850,000 followers).
In terms of page categories, the jewelry category continues to top the chart. The movies category, which was popular in previous years, made way for a new category – computing. Other new categories that joined this year are supermarkets and consumer goods, which shows again this year the growing trend of online sales and Facebook as an excellent B2C sales platform – Israelis want to buy more via Facebook and follow celebrities less.
In conclusion, despite the feeling that Facebook usage is declining, reality shows otherwise. Israelis are shifting to sales through Facebook (and thereby also increasing Facebook usage), user activity frequency has remained almost identical to last year, and usage of the mobile app is only growing. The bottom line: don’t rush to write off Facebook.
