The Complete Guide to Using Google Gemini in 2026

In an era where the market is flooded with chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok, many users over recent months have shifted to Google’s Gemini for most of their daily tasks. Today, Gemini offers not only a tool for quick answers, but an entire suite of tools including image generation, video creation, research, software coding, and more. Furthermore, it connects to our personal data across Gmail, Drive, Google Docs, Calendar, and many other options. In the following guide, I will explain how to master Gemini and get to know all its tools, as well as highlight where its drawbacks lie.

Model Comparison - Flash, Thinking, and Pro

Google provides us with 3 different models to use, differing in response time and output quality.

Gemini 3 Flash – The Fast Model

The Gemini 3 Flash model delivers quick answers and is designed for routine tasks. The model excels at text processing or data summarization. We use it to get quick answers, such as asking what the weather will be tomorrow or what time it is in New York.

Gemini 3 Thinking – The Reasoning Model

The Thinking model adds a reasoning layer that causes it to think deeply before providing an answer. It is slower compared to the Flash model but significantly more reliable. Its main constraint is the volume of data it can analyze; thus, it bridges the gap between the fast but less thorough Flash model and the Pro model, which yields excellent results but takes a long time to respond. It is the model I use for most of my tasks.

Gemini 3 Pro – The Professional Model

Compared to Flash, the Pro model is built for highly complex tasks, such as solving mathematical problems and writing high-level code. The model can process massive amounts of data, enabling it to analyze vast document archives, entire code repositories, or lengthy video files. We use it when we want to write code or translate word-for-word while maintaining maximum quality. Its drawback is that it takes a considerable amount of time to generate answers. For software development, I recommend using Claude.

Additional Tools

Beyond the core models themselves, Google has added an entire suite of dedicated tools that elevate Gemini’s productivity, including image generation, video creation, research, and more.

Image Generation: Nano Banana Pro

The Nano Banana Pro model is the best image generation model available today. It allows generating realistic images and infographics, as well as editing existing images, including blending new objects into existing photos.

Veo 3.1: Video Generation

Veo 3.1 is Google’s most advanced video generation model, capable of generating videos up to 8 seconds long in HD quality, including high-grade audio generation from background music to dialogue. You can use reference images to produce videos that maintain consistency across characters, objects, or artistic style throughout multiple scenes, turning images into video. The model is relatively slow and subject to daily generation limits.

Deep Research: The Research Agent

Deep Research is a tool that conducts research autonomously: the process begins with planning, where Gemini presents a detailed research plan for approval or editing. It then performs searches across internet sources and personal data (integrated Google Docs), automatically self-correcting along the way. Finally, it compiles a report complete with citations for every section of the research. You can click on any citation to see the exact source from which the paragraph was drawn.

Canvas: The Workspace and Vibe Coding

Canvas is a tool designed for text editing and writing, including adjusting length, shifting tone, checking grammar, proofreading, and improving sentence flow. It also serves as a development and coding environment (Vibe Coding) for programmers, including code reviews, commenting, bug fixing, and more. Personally, I recommend Claude for software development.

One of the advantages of Canvas is the ability to highlight part of the text or code and ask Gemini to “change only this paragraph” or “explain what this line does.”

Customized / Guided Learning

Google integrated the LearnLM project into Gemini; the tool does not just provide answers, but guides the user to understand the material deeply through open-ended questions, step-by-step explanations, and visual aids. The system creates a personalized learning path for each user, identifying knowledge gaps and adjusting exercise and test difficulty in real time.

Deep Think

Google built a tool for scientists and researchers: Deep Think specializes in solving complex engineering and scientific problems, from identifying logical flaws in academic papers that went unnoticed by human peer reviewers, to converting hand-drawn sketches into 3D printable files. It does not merely answer questions; it is capable of conducting autonomous research, running physics simulations via code, and working with partial or unstructured data. Currently, the model is available to Google AI Ultra subscribers and researchers, marking it as a premium tool for professional and academic work.

File Usage and NotebookLM Integration

Gemini’s ability to connect local data sources on our computer (our own data) with internet searches or its internal knowledge base (external data) is one of its core strengths. Integration with NotebookLM transforms Gemini from an AI chat into a tool connected to your organizational or personal knowledge, anchoring its answers in specific, grounded information.

File Uploads

Gemini supports uploading a wide variety of files: PDFs, spreadsheets, source code, images, and even video files. When uploading a file to a conversation, the model ensures its responses are grounded in the specific content uploaded, reducing hallucinations and improving accuracy in tasks like summarizing financial reports or analyzing academic papers.

Connection to NotebookLM

NotebookLM is a Google tool for uploading documents into folders and querying them using Gemini—essentially making Gemini provide answers based solely on the documents we uploaded. In Gemini, you can connect entire NotebookLM folders directly into a Gemini chat thread. On one hand, this allows us to ask questions based on the data uploaded to NotebookLM; on the other hand, it lets us tap into up-to-date web knowledge through Gemini. Gemini enables linking multiple folders simultaneously and transforming the contained information into infographics, concept maps, or strategic reports via Canvas.

Integration with Google Workspace

Gemini is now embedded within Google’s Workspace suite (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, and Slides), allowing you to edit documents, summarize emails, add images to presentations, and more—all directly from within the apps’ interfaces.

Gmail
In Gmail, Gemini acts as a personal assistant capable of summarizing emails into key points, allowing employees to get up to speed on projects within seconds. You can ask it to draft email replies or write new emails based on brief instructions while adjusting the tone (professional, formal, or friendly). Additionally, Gemini scans your email and calendar to automatically suggest available meeting times.

Google Sheets

Gemini in Google Sheets eliminates the need to remember complex formulas. You can simply ask Gemini to build a project tracking table, create a formula to calculate growth rates, or organize data. In seconds, you become a data expert.

Google Drive and Docs
Within Google Drive, you can perform semantic searches. What does that mean? Instead of searching for a file name, you can ask “What were the key takeaways from the November report?”, and Gemini will locate the relevant files, summarize them, and display the information. Within Google Docs, Gemini allows you to write initial drafts, rewrite paragraphs, and generate images to illustrate documents.

Google Meet and Slides

In Google Meet, Gemini can automatically take meeting notes, summarize the discussion, and distribute an action-item list to participants. In Google Slides, Gemini assists in presentation design by generating background images, adding pictures, or condensing long documents into slides.

Gems

Gems are customized versions of Gemini that let you create dedicated AI experts for any topic or task—for example, a Gem that crafts Google Ads according to your explicit instructions. The creation process involves providing detailed guidelines defining the “persona” (the role the Gem will fulfill), the specific task, and the desired response format. You can attach files to each Gem, allowing Gemini to operate within defined knowledge boundaries and provide accurate, tailored answers to the user’s specific needs, eliminating the need to write repeated prompts each time.

How to Work Effectively with Gemini

  • Be clear – The clearer the prompt, the better the answer will be.
  • Don’t stop on the first try – You can ask for alternative phrasing or different directions until you get what works best.
  • Always verify – It is important to review the content, ensure the facts are correct, and polish it before use.
  • Provide context – The more you explain what you need, the more accurate the result will be.
  • Integrate with Google tools – Working through Gmail, Docs, or Sheets saves time and yields smoother results.
  • Work together – Gemini accelerates processes, but the strategy and creative direction still come from the team.

Limitations to keep in mind
Despite the advantages, it is important to understand the limitations: its accuracy is limited, it may make mistakes or misinterpretations, and you need to check its work. There is a limit to its creativity—ultimately, it is a statistical analysis model. It is less suited for generating completely novel concepts. Be cautious about entering sensitive information into Gemini.

Daily integration to get the most out of Gemini

Use it for recurring tasks: writing emails, reports, or meeting summaries. Test it on small tasks to see if it truly saves you time. Learn how to write good prompts to get consistent answers. If you don’t know how to create a good prompt, talk to it. Tell it what you want to achieve and ask it to write a prompt for you.

Summary and Conclusions - Where the Future of AI Models is Headed

How did I prepare this article? I used the Deep Research model to conduct initial research, adapted it to match my writing style, and added notes on topics it missed. Afterward, I edited its texts including the headings into the structure I wanted, created images and videos for the article, and compiled everything into a ready presentation. Gemini didn’t replace me; it was an assistant that helped build the foundation for the article, though I still had to guide and direct it to achieve an outstanding result.
In my opinion, Gemini is the most advanced AI model available today, transforming from a conversational companion into your employee. Gemini handles content writing, editing, image creation, and video production. With its advanced tools, it enables us to work within Google’s ecosystem and save valuable time. Soon, Gemini will also be integrated into Chrome (this feature is currently unavailable in Israel), allowing it to perform actions across websites. If you’re still using ChatGPT—now is the time to switch. However, it’s important to emphasize: ultimately, you must be the creative mind planning your tasks, while the chat is simply your worker executing tasks for you.
